Gold FAQ

Q: What types of gold scrap do you buy?

Martin’s Coins & Jewelry buys all solid gold items, including jewelry, gold nuggets, gold dental crowns, and much more.

Q: My gold jewelry is broken. Do you still buy it?

Absolutely! It makes no difference whether it’s intact or not. Gold is gold, so damage will not affect its value.

Q: I have a ring marked 14K on it. What does that mean?

Most (but not all) jewelry is marked with the fineness of gold on it. Most of what people bring in is 10, 14, 18, 22 or 24 Karat gold. The number indicates the percentage of “pure gold” in an item. The higher the number, the more pure the gold. 24K is pure gold, while 14K gold is .583 pure gold.

Q: How do you appraise my gold scrap?

When you bring your gold in, we will separate it by Karat (like 10, 14, 18 etc.), and then weigh it on our scale to figure out how much you have in pure gold. Then, we use the current gold prices available on www.kitco.com (it’s on our home page, too) to calculate the value of your gold. We will then make you our best offer based on that information. We treat all customers equally, so you can be confident you are getting the best deal up front.

Q: I have a necklace that I think is gold but I’m not sure. Should I bring it in?

Absolutely! We will test it right in our store and tell you for certain if it is gold or not. Free of charge.

Q: I have a ring with an Amethyst in it. How do you weigh the gold with a stone in it?

With my 20 years of experience buying scrap gold, I can easily take into account any stone in any jewelry item when calculating the gold weight. Any stone you have in your jewelry will be considered and calculated into my offer on your jewelry.

Q: If you make an offer on my scrap gold and I decide NOT to accept it, can I decide to accept your offer a week later?

Because our offers are based on current gold prices (and because we work on a very small profit margin), all offers are good only at the time they are made. Gold prices are volatile and can change by $50/oz or more during the course of a day. We will be happy to re-evaluate your scrap gold anytime (and if prices go up, you could do well!).

Q: I see ads on TV for those gold-buying companies, like Cash4gold or Goldbuyersdirect. Are they strong gold buyers?

My customers have told me some horror stories about their experiences with those companies (and even the “hotel buyers” that show up in town on occasion). I have heard of several people being offered or given literally pennies on the dollar versus what their gold was really worth. Your best bet is to deal with someone locally (like Martin’s Coins & Jewelry) rather than trust your gold to a cheap TV ad or the “here today, gone tomorrow” hotel buyers.
